Your tap water’s final barrier — why point-of-use treatment matters

Findings from a peer-reviewed University of Arizona study show that a certified reverse-osmosis system prevents an estimated 6.6 million acute illness cases and $928 million in healthcare costs nationally — every year. Here’s what the research means for Atlanta metro families.

Based on: Verhougstraete, Reynolds, Pearce-Walker & Gerba — Journal of Water and Health, 18(6), 968–982 (2020). Funded by the Water Quality Research Foundation.

9MAcute waterborne illness cases in the U.S. every year
6.3MOf those are diarrheal illness from waterborne pathogens
$24.2BTotal annual U.S. healthcare cost from waterborne illness
35%Reduction in GI illness with a certified RO system

Why treated water still needs a final barrier

Water can leave the treatment plant meeting every federal standard and still pick up contamination before it reaches your glass. Pipe breaks, cross-connections, back-siphoning, and bacterial regrowth in distribution systems and household plumbing are all real pathways for contamination — none of which show up on your annual water quality report.

44.1 million Americans (14%) rely on largely unregulated, untested private wells — which account for roughly 30% of all reported U.S. drinking water outbreaks. Municipal treatment is not the whole story, and wells are an even larger gap.

That’s the core finding that motivated this University of Arizona research: the treatment plant is not your last line of defense. Your tap is. And what happens between the plant and your glass matters enormously for your family’s health.

What the research actually found

The study conducted a rigorous cost-benefit analysis of point-of-use (POU) water treatment devices using real-world household intervention data. The headline findings:

35%Reduction in GI illness incidence with a certified RO + pre-filtration + carbon system
6.6MAcute illness cases prevented nationally per year by widespread POU adoption
$928MIn annual healthcare cost savings projected from POU systems nationally
$130/yrAverage annual operating cost of an RO system over a 5-year period

“A single E. coli O157:H7 infection can cost a family of three $1,260 — far more than an entire year of RO system protection.”

The economics are clear: point-of-use treatment isn’t a luxury upgrade. It’s a cost-effective health investment — one that pays for itself the first time it prevents a serious illness.

The pathogens driving the numbers

Of the 9 million annual acute illness cases, roughly 6.3 million are diarrheal and gastrointestinal illnesses driven by waterborne pathogens:

PathogenEst. Annual U.S. CasesNotable Risk
Rotavirus3,500,000Leading cause of severe diarrhea in children
Cryptosporidium1,690,000$6B chronic complications + $11B mortality costs annually
Campylobacter320,000Can cause long-term joint and nerve complications
Norovirus300,000Highly contagious; rapid household spread
Giardia260,000Resistant to standard chlorine treatment
E. coli O157:H7150,000Can cause life-threatening kidney failure (HUS)
Salmonella59,000Higher severity in elderly and immunocompromised

Cryptosporidium alone carries the highest long-term cost of any pathogen studied — $6.0 billion in chronic complication costs and $11.0 billion in mortality costs annually. It’s also chlorine-resistant. During the 1993 Milwaukee Cryptosporidium outbreak — the largest waterborne disease outbreak in U.S. history — households with point-of-use filtration reported significantly less illness.

What this means for the Atlanta metro

Metro Atlanta represents about 1.9% of the U.S. population — 6.48 million residents. Scaling the national diarrheal illness rate projects approximately 119,000 diarrheal illness cases per year in metro Atlanta attributable to waterborne pathogens.

This figure is likely conservative. More than 99% of metro Atlanta’s water supply comes from surface sources — the Chattahoochee River, Lake Lanier, and Lake Allatoona — rather than groundwater. Surface water is far more exposed to microbiological contamination from runoff, wildlife, and sewage overflow than deep, naturally filtered groundwater. A region drawing almost entirely from rivers and reservoirs should carry higher, not average, waterborne pathogen risk.

Cherokee County and Woodstock draw from Lake Allatoona — a surface reservoir — which puts local families squarely in this elevated-risk profile.

Who benefits most from a final barrier

Certain groups face disproportionate risk from waterborne pathogens — and disproportionate benefit from point-of-use protection:

  • Infants and young childrenImmune systems still developing; lower body weight means higher relative exposure
  • Pregnant womenWaterborne illness can have serious consequences for both mother and developing child
  • Adults 65 and olderReduced immune response increases severity and recovery time
  • Immunocompromised individualsChemotherapy patients, transplant recipients, HIV-positive individuals face life-threatening risk from pathogens that cause mild illness in healthy adults
  • PetsCryptosporidium and giardia affect animals just as they do people; filtered water benefits every member of the household

If any member of your household falls into one of these categories, point-of-use filtration moves from a smart investment to an essential one.

Water for Life has been installing certified filtration and reverse osmosis systems in Cherokee County and metro Atlanta since 1989 — over 13,000 systems installed. Our process starts with testing your specific water in your home, so the system we recommend is built for your actual contamination profile, not the national average.

The research is compelling. The economics make sense. The risk is real. The fix is affordable. Let us show you what’s in your water and give your family their final barrier.
